Writing Groups
Broadly, there are two kinds of writing groups: professional and working. One you join primarily for the programs and the networking; the other, mainly to get/share opinions about your and the other members' work. Both can be wonderful or miserable.
I'm a professional member of the Society of Southwest Authors (SSA), the International Women's Writing Guild (IWWG), of the Arizona Authors Association (AAA), and of American Book Wizards (ABW, formerly Wizards of Words). I find their newsletters useful; and when I can find time to attend, I enjoy their programs, too.
I've been a member of . . . three? four? working groups, and I learned more about my craft from all of them. What's most useful for me right now is a not-named-yet group. We meet for dinner maybe once a month, which is fun, but what really helps me is that we let each other know by e-mail what our daily or weekly writing goals are, and congratulate each other when we reach them. I find that telling other professionals what I plan to get done really motivates me to, well, get it done.
